Michael Vartan: The Double Agent by unknown
Tele 7 Jours, October 26, 2002
French emigrated in Hollywood, Sylvie and Johnny's nephew has definitely won his star's stripes, thanks to his role in Alias.
Journalist: How do you feel about your ties with Johnny, Sylvie and David?
Michael: I never wanted to use the fame of my family to succeed in show business. In the United States no one really cares if I am Sylvie's nephew. I grew up far from Paris in a small village (300 inhabitants), called Fleury, and I used to see Johnny and Sylvie very often when I was a child. I also see them when we are all together in California. But it's not as often as it used to be. Even my cousin David is in Los Angeles less often.
Journalist: Why did you move to the US?
Michael: I made a lot of trips back and forth when my parents separated. My mum remarried with the author Ian Lafrenais and they told me to take comedy lessons. Then it was all about luck and meetings. Another reason why I decided to leave is that I didn't want to do military service.
Journalist: Do you miss France?
Michael: Sincerely, I feel more American than French. Since my dad's death last year, I don't have that many connections with France. It's associated with a sad memory... I had my best childhood memories in Normandie but I couldn't live there anymore.
Journalist: A you are presented as one of the most eligible bachelors in the U.S...
Michael: It's nice but I really don't think about that when I look in the mirror. My small celebrity is linked with the success of Alias. Nobody looked at me before. I made movies with Drew Barrymore, Madonna, Gwyneth Paltrow, but it was always a supporting role. My role in Friends made me known in the TV business. I also made two episodes of Ally McBeal in 2000, just a few months before my audition for Alias.
Journalist: Alias is about a group of secret agents who travel all around the world, but all the episodes are filmed in LA. How is it credible?
Michael: The city is composed by a lot of neighborhoods: Chinatown, Little Tokyo, Korea town... You can have the impression you're in another country because you can go from Russian to Mexican, Italian, Asian...
Journalist: Did you change your habits since the success of Alias?
Michael: No, I am not a regular in the party scene of Hollywood. The shooting of the series takes me 12 hours a day. When I have some free time, I play hockey. I train 2 or 3 times a week. It's great if you want to put the stress off.
Journalist: You star in One hour Photo with Robin Williams and they spoke a lot about your nude scene in the US.
Michael: Only American people can be shocked by seeing a part of the bottom or a breast. In One Hour Photo, I play a guy who cheats on his wife. Robin Williams is a crazy man who forces my character to simulate a sexual act with my mistress. The perversity of the act was way more disturbing for me.
