Hot for Teacherby Dina Sansing
Seventeen, August 1999
Adorable Michael Vartan, Drew Barrymore's English teacher in Never Been Kissed, shares his feelings about kissing, bowling, and why the best things in life are free. Note to high school principals: If all teachers were this cute, you'd never have a problem with attendance. In Never Been Kissed, Michael Vartan plays an American Lit teacher who falls for the undercover reporter (Drew Barrymore) who winds up in his English class. I recently chatted with the French-born actor about what it's like to kiss Drew, the Internet rumors about him, and the one word that could get him to do just about anything.
How did you get into acting?
My mom suggested that I join an acting class to meet people my own age. I was an only child, and when I moved to LA, I was basically the weird dysfunctional duckling of the family. But the magic word, though, was "free." When I heard she was going to pay for it -- being the 18-year old slacker that I was -- it sounded good.
Then what happened?
One thing led to another. I did a lot of really, really bad things. Terrible movies, bad parts. Now I'm a little less terrible. It's a weird business. I wake up every day and say 'what the hell am I doing?'
If you weren't an actor, what would you want to be?
Anything having to do with sports. I am an absolute sports fanatic. I would give up all of the few things I've achieved to play AAA-ball somewhere without even thinking twice. The only thing I wouldn't give up acting for is bowling. I would rather be an actor than a bowler.
Not a big bowling fan?
No, not professionally.
What do you think of your co-star Drew Barrymore?
She's not someone who's embarrassed about where's she's from and what she's gone through and has come out the other side with a lot of integrity and she's very proud of who she is.
What about that kiss?
Oh my god! It was honestly one of the best kisses I've ever had -- and it was a movie kiss. I can't even imagine how good it would have been if we were in a room alone.
How many times did you do it?
Not enough. I'd say we kissed for a good three hours. On and off, of course.
Did any off-screen sparks fly on the set between you and Drew?
She was still with her boyfriend at the time, so that was certainly not going to happen.
Are you married?
No, I'm not -- but I been told that I'm married. On the Internet, it says I've been married twice. But that's another guy. I'm single, single, single.
When was your first kiss?
I was 15 when I had my real first kiss. [I was living in Normandy] and it was with a Dutch girl behind the bushes. When I kissed her I got that knot in the stomach, that warm feeling.
What projects are you working on now?
Well, I'm working on getting the Mets to the World Series. Besides that I'm doing a movie with Madonna next month. It's kind of insane to work with the most famous person on the face of the planet. It's terrifying.
You're a big Mets fan?
Yeah. I'll make an express trip back to NY to go to a Mets game. They lost for so many years and they were an exciting team to team to watch when I lived in New York. Plus, I like the color orange.
